Little do people know, the success for Perry began at a very early age in 1992 when he first watched an episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” This enabled him to tackle his emotional turmoil. After watching the episode, he sat and began writing letters to himself – about his past physical and mental abuse while growing up. He re-named all the people within these real life stories, afraid that someone would read them. These letters later became the basis of his plays.
Perry spent a period of time penniless, living on the streets of Atlanta after his play ”I Know I’ve been changed” flopped.
He worked in construction before his film career took off.
Has a 12-acre estate outside Atlanta. He bought the former Dean Gardens in Johns Creek, GA for $7.6 million (previously listed as high as $40 million). The property has 1200 feet adjoining the Chattahoochee River, a golf course and is 58 acres.
